Current War Situation in Ukraine 

The end of May, 2023:

  • russian troops are trying to fully occupy the Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts.
  • The intensity of fighting in the Bakhmut direction decreased. However, it is still one of the hottest points on the war map.

 

May, 2023: russia launched 21 attacks on on Kyiv (mostly at night)

  • May 1: 18 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles were launched on Ukraine. 15 were shot.
  • May 3: 26 “Shahed-136/131” drones attacked Ukraine, 21 were shot. Due to the explosions 21 people civilian people were killed in Kherson.
  • May 4 – russian army again attacked Ukraine with drones – 24 “Shahed-136/131” were launched, 18 were shot. Due to falling debris some cars were damaged.

Armed Forces of Ukraine for the first time shot the hypersonic Kh-47 “Kinzhal” missile thanks to the Patriot anti-aircraft missile complex.

  • May 5: 4 Kh-22 missiles were launched on Kyiv, all were shot.
  • May 8: 30 drones aimed at Kiev, all were shot. Due to falling debris, 7 cars, a residential building, tank with 5 tons of fuel were damaged. 1 car burnt. 15 trucks and 5 passenger cars were damaged in the parking lot. 5 people were injured.
  • May 9: russians launched 25 Kalibr and X-101/X-555 cruise missiles. 23 were shot. Private houses and yards were damaged.
  • May 13: 22 out of 26 drones were shot over Ukraine. Kyiv was attacked by the “Shahed 136”, debris damaged the houses. Residential and other buildings were damaged in Khmelnytskyi. 21 people were injured.
  • May 14: 25 drones and 3 missiles were shot over Ukraine.
  • May 16: very intense attack from different directions on Kyiv. 6 Kinzhal aero-ballistic missiles, 9 cruise missiles, and 3 land-based S-400 cruise missiles. All the weapons were destroyed by Ukrainian Air Defenders. 3 people were injured. Cars and roads were damaged.
  • May 17 -18: Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 29 out of 30 cruise missiles and 4 drones. Falling debris caused fires in two districts of Kyiv.One of the missiles fell near a kindergarten in Kyiv, nobody was injured.
  • May 19: 16 drones out of 22 were destroyed, 3 Kalibr missiles were shot (out of 6)
  • May 20: 18 “Shahed-136/131” attacked Kyiv region. In total, 21 drones were launched. All destroyed. Due to falling debris a fire broke out in a residential building. There were no casualties.
  • May 22: 20 UAVs, 4 cruise missiles, and Su-35 were destroyed over Ukraine.
  • May 23: 8 drones were launched, all of them were shot.
  • May 25: 36 out of 36 “Shahed-136/131” drones were shot down.
  • May 26: Air Force of Ukraine destroyed 10 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles and 25 drones during a night attack over Kyiv. It was a festive day for all Kyivans – Day of the Capital.
  • May 28: 52 out of 54 Shahed-136/131 drones were shot at night. 1 person was killed, and 2 were injured. Cars and residential buildings were also damaged.
  • May 29: 40 cruise missiles and near 35 drones were launched. 37 missiles and 29 drones were shot. Residential buildings and infrastructure facilities were damaged in several districts of the Kyiv region. There were no casualties.
  • May 30: 29 out of 31 UAVs were destroyed at night over Ukraine, almost all of them aimed at Kyiv. Residential building and cars were damaged by debris. 1 person died, 4 were injured.
  • June 1: russians attacked Kyiv with 10 cruise and ballistic missiles. All were destroyed by the air defense forces. Due to the falling debris the hospital and hight-rise building were destroyed. 3 people died, including 5-year-old child. 14 injured. The 1 st of June is the Child’s Day in Ukraine.
  • June 2: the air defense forces of Ukraine destroyed 21 Shahed-136/131 drones and 15 missiles.

Children and the war

  • Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights, stated that the Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that Ukrainian children and prisoners were forcibly transferred through the territory of belarus with the participation of the authorities of that country.
  • russians also announced that they had sent 375 Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson oblast to the Western Caucasus for “rehabilitation”. It is difficult to return children home after such “recovery”.
  • russian invaders violate all the rights of children and have already killed 501 сhildren, seriously injured 989, deported 19,400, and 394 children are missing.
  • The Office of the Attorney General provides procedural guidance in proceedings for more than 2,900 war-related crimes against children.

‼️ How many kilometers of roads would be filled if the liquidated Russians were laid out on them? They would surround the megacities of Russia ‼️

Planting of spring crops (2023)

As of June 2, 2023

About 12 mln ha were planted in Ukraine, including:

  • spring wheat — 269.5 K ha (94% of predicted number);
  • spring barley — 766.1 K ha (74%);
  • peas – 136.1 K ha (113%);
  • oats — 145.6 K ha (99%);
  • corn — 3 892, 5 mln ha (108%);
  • buckwheat — 106.1 K ha (92%);
  • millet — 46.1 K ha (77%);
  • other cereals and legumes — 109.7 K ha.

 

  • Planting of sugar beets completed on 213.1 K ha.
  • 3.966 mln ha of sunflower have been planted (forecast – 5.6 mln ha) .

 

Damage to small farmers (2023)

As of May 29,2023

  • Due to the war in Ukraine, the damage to small farmers (up to 250 ha under cultivation) is estimated almost $4 billion;
  • Approximately 12% of small agricultural businesses reported that part of their land was potentially contaminated by unexploded weapons.
  • Front-line regions are affected the most (32% of owners of the small farms);
  • 90% reported a decrease in income, with more than 70% of them recording a significant decrease of more than 25%.
  • Small producers of livestock products were less affected, but more than 60% of them reported a decrease in income; in particular, 46% reported a significant or sharp decrease.
  • 8% of small producers completely stopped their activity (of which 1% are producers of livestock products and almost 7% include plant growers).

Black sea grain initiative

  • Since the beginning of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, about 30,5 mln tons of agricultural products have been exported.
  • May 15-21, 2023 (the 42nd week of operation) – 118,3 th. tons of agricultural products were exported (78% less than a week before).
  • May 22-28, 2023 – (the 43rd week of operation) – 210,5 th. tons of agricultural products were exported (78% more than a week before).
  • After the agreement extension, only 11 vessels passed inspection at the entrance.
  • According to the UN, the last ship left the Port of Chornomorsk on May 19.
  • Port of Chornomorsk is a leader in processing grain cargoes – since August 1, 2022, 380 ships left the port (export of agricultural products exceeded 11 mln tons).
  • Pivdennyi port is actually blocked.
  • More than 1.5 mln tons of agricultural products are stored in this port.
  • At least 10 countries are waiting for this grain (Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh, China, etc.).
  • The last vessel left Pivdennyi port on May 11.
  • Russia continues to block the operation of the port.

Losses of the agricultural sector

  • Ukrainian farmers lost $1 billion due to russia’s delay in ship inspections within the “grain corridor”. This number includes the money that Ukrainian agricultural producers did not actually receive and the payment to the ship owners as they stood in the queue for a very long time.
  • Ukraine exports less than 50% of grains through the “grain corridor”. The other part is exported by alternative routes.
  • By the end of June 2023, the blocking of the export of agricultural products from Ukraine amounted $18 billion.
  • About 4 mln tons of grain have been stolen by russia from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
  • Grain was shipped to sanctioned countries.
  • The total amount of the blockade of ports hit $36 billion.

Syrian ship Finikia passes the Bosphorus on May 25 on its way to the port of Tartus in Syria. It is carrying 18 th. tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat, which was loaded at the Avlita terminal in temporarily occupied Sevastopol.
