Night attack on Odessa

March 2, 2024

  • The russian drone hit a multi-storey building in Odessa.
  • 12 people killed, five of them children: 4-month-old Tymofii, 7-month-old Liza, 3-year-old Mark, 8-year-old Zlata, and Serhii, who was to turn 10 in July.

Attack on port infrustructure (Odesa)

 March, 2024

  • March 6: russians hit the port infrastructure of Odesa.
  • They launched 18 Shahed drones. 15 were hit by the air defense.
  • The attack damaged warehouses, loading equipment, and trucks carrying grain.
  • Five people were killed.
  • It happened during the visit to the city of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

 

Blockade of the Polish border: Situation

  • February 11: Polish protesters damaged trucks with Ukrainian grain at the “Yagodyn-Dorohusk” railway station.
  • February 23: In Poland, near the “Dorohusk” railway station, unknown persons opened train car with Ukrainian rapeseed, which was transiting to Hamburg, Germany.
  • February 24: Unknown persons opened a train car, this time with soybeans.
  • February 25: Unknown people opened train car with Ukrainian corn near Bydgoszcz, Poland.
  • February 27: A large-scale protest action against Ukrainian agricultural products and the EU Green Course was held in Warsaw. At least 10,000 protesters took part in it.
  • March 1: Polish farmers started a protest near the passenger service area on the national road S61 near the border with Lithuania. 30-40 farmers without agricultural machinery were taking part in the protest.
  • Polish farmers announced that they will continue their protests at the border until April 30.
  • March 6: Large farmers’ protest began in Warsaw.
  • Main demands of Polish farmers are the rejection of the European Green Deal and the restriction on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine.
  • March 7: Poland offers the EU to cancel all trade preferences that Ukraine received after the war began.

Aggressive blockade of the Polish border: consequences

  • As of March 4, the number of trucks on the Polish border, waiting to exports the agricultural produce, amounts to 1044.
  • In 2024, the percentage of grain in the structure of transport by road is 24%: 10% – wheat, 1% – barley and 13% – corn (the Ministry of Agrarian Policy).
  • The percentage of “grain” trucks that are at the border ranges from 35 to 50%.
  • The share of spoiled grain due to downtime at the border ranges from 5 to 15%.
  • Ukrainian farmers and grain transporters have already lost from $954,000 to $1,485,000 during the 23 days of downtime at the Polish borders.

Export

  • In February 2024, Ukraine managed to export 8 mln tons of agricultural products, which is 3.4% more than the previous month.
  • 5.2 mln tons were exported through the sea corridor. This is a record volume since the beginning of a large-scale invasion.
  • Since August 2023, 19 mln tons of agricultural products have been shipped to foreign markets, which is 68% of the total volume of cargo.
  • 2.5 mln tons of grain and oil were exported through the Danube ports during the first months of 2024.
  • Export of sunflower oil in February exceeded last year’s figure by 50%. 603K tons were exported to foreign markets.
  • Ukraine increased export of dairy products by 22% in February. Last month, 8.5 thousand tons of dairy products were exported for $16.6 million.

Planting season

  • Agrarians of 12 oblasts have started planting of cereals and legumes: wheat, barley and peas.
  • As of the March 7, 68 K ha have already been planted:

– 4.3 K ha of wheat;

– 38.9 K ha of barley;

– 23.3 K ha of peas;

– 1,5 K ha of oats.

Peculiarities of planting season 2024:

  • Costs for the four main expenses components (fertilizers, chemicals, seeds, fuel) will be reduced: for grains by 5% – to 311 USD/ha and by 4% – to 315 USD/t – for oilseeds .
  • The area under soybeans will increase by 21% compared to last year, corn at this time will decrease by 9%.
  • Areas under spring crops may decrease by 0.5 mln ha (or 3.7%) compared to last year.
  • About 4 mln ha of agricultural land cannot be currently used for planing.
