Battlefield updates

  • Heavy fightings are going on near Avdiivka. Ukrainian forces have repelled russian offensive effort towards Avdiivka in the past several days and inflicted heavy personnel and equipment losses on russian troops in the area.
  • Ukrainian forces continue counteroffensive operations near Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia oblast.

  • russian missile hit a depot in Kharkiv oblast which belongs to the Nova Poshta delivery company.
  • 6 people died, 17 injured.

Kakhovka HPP

The UN has calculated the damage from the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP

  • The breach of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam on June 6 caused enormous damage, flooding 620 km² of territory in four regions — Kherson, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhya, which directly affected 100,000 residents.
  • There was significant damage to housing, infrastructure, the environment and cultural sites such as historic buildings, museums, and places of worship.
  • The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam caused almost $14 billion damage to Ukraine.

Export

  • Export potential of Ukrainian ports fell by 40% as a result of russian attacks.
  • Over 300 K tons of agricultural products were destroyed.
  • Since the beginning of October, more than 500 K tons of grain have been transported for export by railway.
  • Almost half of this volume (228 K tons) was delivered to the ports of Great Odesa thanks to the operation of the temporary sea corridor.
  • Hungary allowed the import of Ukrainian sugar.
  • Romania agreed on a mechanism to regulate the import of Ukrainian wheat, corn, sunflower and soybeans.
  • Ukraine reduced the volume of transportation of agricultural products in transit through the territories of neighboring European Union member states by 3-4 times.
  • During the 30 days of operation of the temporary sea export corridor, 31 ships entered the ports of Great Odesa.

May 1 – October 10, 2023:

10.4 mln tons of Ukrainian agricultural products transited through the territory of Romania. It is 60% of Ukrainian grain export:

  • wheat — 4,36 mln tons;
  • corn — 3,31 mln tons;
  • sunflower oil — 1,53 mln tons;
  • rapeseed — 1,12 mln tons;
  • sunflower — 49,48 K tons;
  • wheat flour — 12,25 K tons .

  • On October 17, in the Izyum district of Kharkiv oblast, during field work, a tractor exploded on an unknown explosive device.
  • A 52-year-old man died.

Planting season

As of October 17, 2023

  • 70% of the planned areas for winter crops have already been planted.
  • Ukrainian farmers planted almost 4.5 mln hectares of winter crops.
  • Winter cereals were planted on an area of 3,343,000 hectares.
  • Volyn agrarians are the leaders; they have already cultivated 97% of the projected area.

Harvesting

57.6 mln tons of crops were harvested (39.2 mln tons of cereals and legumes and 18.45 mln tons of oil crops):

● sunflower – 14 million tons;

● soybeans – 4.2 million tons;

● rapeseed – 4 million tons.
